Advent Word: Go

Image
This morning I had to go on an unplanned journey, following an unplanned breakage of our shower unit. I really did not want to go, but I did want people to be able to shower over Christmas, so going to buy the necessary replacement parts was a must. My husband has now skilfully done the work necessary, for which I am grateful. Today's Advent word on the 20th day in the Advent Calendar I am following is 'go'. As time is limited today, I am reposting below, some thoughts on the word 'go' that I first posted in Advent last year in a post called #go. The word 'go' got me thinking about the last journey we each have to make, that is death. 'Go' also reminds me of the many ways we need to 'let go' in life, sometimes to let go of things, attitudes or habits, in order to make room for something better. The final letting 'go' is the letting go of life as we go into death. For Christians, that final letting go into death, is in the '...

Holding on and letting go

When to hold on and when to let go is a recurring question in my life. How do you decide what to keep or what to discard? The question applies to things, attitudes, habits, beliefs and sometimes people. These thoughts are prompted by my feelings about a recent change to a newer car. I have had to let go of having a mechanical handbrake and get used to an electronic parking brake instead. That is proving an exercise in trust. My husband assures me it is a much safer system than the old method, but I have not found the change easy. Sometimes though it is time for change. That often involves letting go of something in order to make way for something better. Last year I posted about thinking of Jesus' 'Beatitudes' from the Sermon on the Mount as some kind of call to 'let go'. This was a new way of thinking of them for me and I found it really helpful. Perhaps you may find it helpful too. Try reading 'Beatitudes: a call to let go'. PRAYER WHEN ...

Washing and new beginnings

Image
What do you do when you're dirty and sweaty? You wash.  What do you do when you're tired and stressed? You relax in a bath or pool. What do you do when you need a kick start in the morning? You wake yourself up with a shower. Wonderful gifts for those of us with the privilege of easy access to fresh, clean water. After a bath, shower or swim, one can feel like a new person, ready to face whatever comes next. Tomorrow is the Sunday when Christians remember the baptism of Christ in the river Jordan by his cousin John. It marked the beginning of his public ministry. Jesus didn't need to undergo John's baptism of repentance, but he wanted to be alongside those who did, fully immersed in being human. Without water we couldn't live, so it's not surprising that most of the world's religions use water in a variety of symbolic ways. This is certainly true in the Jewish religion in which Jesus was brought up. One of the blogs I follow is that of Velveteen Ra...
