Gender and marriage

Image
I've read and thought a lot about the issue of marriage between 2 people of the same gender. Some things I've read have infuriated me, especially those written with an assumption that marriage as a social institution has always been the same. It hasn't historically. And for those of us who take the Bible seriously, it is misleading to use terms like 'Biblical marriage' or 'marriage according to the Bible'. As a woman I'm grateful not to have been one of King Solomon's numerous wives and concubines. I'm grateful not to be considered the property of my husband as was the case in England and Wales until the 19th century.  The Church of England is engaged in a debate about same-sex marriage. It has been for a long time and there are sharp and painful divides, just as there were in relation to owning or profiting from slavery, remarriage of divorced people, marrying deceased wife's sister and - in some areas of the Anglican Communion - marriag...

Diversity without enmity in gay marriage debate

Image
Every now and again I read a post on someone else's blog that I wish I'd written myself. Dave Faulkner's post on Big Circumstance today is one of those. In 'An Appeal to Both Sides of the Christian Debate about Gay Marriage' he appeals for the exercise of Christian love and respect between those of opposing opinions. He cites several areas where Christians need to listen to each other: petitions Bible science epistemology ethics Like him I have been appalled by some of the sloppy thinking and wrong facts in certain petitions. Like him my views on the sexuality debate have changed from ten years ago, but are still rather confused, so I too need to work hard on studying and listening more. It was James Jones, the Bishop of Liverpool who (quoting the Dean of Liverpool?) used the phrase 'diversity without enmity' in a 2010 address . He said that diversity without enmity  "provides  a safe and a spiritually and emotionally healthy place...

Royal Wedding

Image
I don't have a flag to wave today for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. My husband and I do have patriotic lollipops to wave and suck, thanks to a gift from our daughter. She has left the UK for a few days - trying to escape the royal weddding? She was a toddler playing around my feet while I watched TV all day for the wedding of William's parents - probably put her off royal weddings for life. Fow today's happy couple and for all getting married today "may their marriage be life-giving and life-long" . From The Marriage Service, Common Worship Photo: My own of lollipops given by my daughter
